Admit it. You’ve secretly wondered how a Twinkie might taste if it were made with chocolate cake. Wonder no more. The golden sponge cake — which gave Twinkie its “gold standard” status — has received a major update. In May, Hostess announced the debut of Chocolate Cake Twinkies: chocolate cake with creamy filling, in the same iconic Twinkie shape.

In concept tests prior to the launch, Chocolate Cake Twinkies scored high marks among consumers; the cakes also performed well in a blind taste test in which most tasters said Chocolate Cake Twinkies met or exceeded expectations.

Consumer feedback led to another upgrade to Hostess’s snack cake portfolio: Fudge Covered Twinkies, known as the Chocodile, have been reinvented in a larger size, a higher crème-to-cake ratio, an intensified fudge coating and slightly modified shape.

Over the past few years Hostess has introduced seasonal varieties including Pumpkin Pie Twinkies and limited-edition items such as the Ghostbusters Green Slime Twinkies. Still, die-hard fans wonder: Is a chocolate Twinkie really a Twinkie?
